Thomas Fielding facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas Fielding was an English engraver who was active between 1776 and 1787. He was born around 1758.

Who Was Thomas Fielding?

Thomas Fielding was an artist who specialized in engraving. Engraving is a way of making pictures by carving designs into a surface, usually metal. These carved plates can then be used to print many copies of the artwork.

Learning to Engrave

Fielding learned his skills from famous engravers of his time. He studied under Francesco Bartolozzi. He also worked closely with William Wynne Ryland. Fielding was Ryland's student and helper. He spent so much time working on Ryland's projects that he didn't create many original works of his own.

His Famous Engravings

After Ryland's career ended, Fielding began to create more engravings under his own name. Some of his well-known works include:

  • 'The Meeting of Jacob and Rachael'
  • 'Moses saved by Pharaoh's Daughter'

These two pieces were made after original paintings by Thomas Stothard. Fielding also created:

  • 'Theseus finding his Father's Sword and Sandals'
  • 'The Death of Procris'

These were made after paintings by Angelica Kauffman. Fielding's engravings were very detailed and beautiful. They were made using a style called "stipple," which uses tiny dots to create images. His work was considered as good as his teacher Ryland's. Not much is known about Fielding's life, and the exact year he died is unknown.

Not to Be Confused With...

It's important not to confuse Thomas Fielding with another engraver named John Fielding. John Fielding worked earlier, around 1750. He engraved some prints based on works by William Hogarth and other artists.
