The Life of Thomas Hamilton
Thomas Hamilton was the son of Charles Hamilton, Lord Binning. His mother was Rachel Baillie. Sadly, his father died in 1732, before Thomas's grandfather. Because of this, Thomas was known as Lord Binning until 1735. After his grandfather passed away, he became Lord Haddington.
He started studying at St Mary Hall, Oxford, in 1737. After his studies, he traveled a lot in Europe. He spent time in cities like Rome and Geneva. In Geneva, he joined a group of friends and thinkers.
Thomas Hamilton returned to Scotland by 1744. However, he did not get very involved in public life or politics. He passed away in Ham, London, on May 19, 1794. His son, Charles Hamilton, became the 8th Earl of Haddington after him.
His Marriages and Children
Lord Haddington was married two times. His first marriage was on October 28, 1750. He married Mary Lloyd, who had been married before. Mary was the daughter of Rowland Holt. Mary Lloyd had a daughter named Mary from her first marriage. This daughter later married John Leslie, 10th Earl of Rothes.

With Mary Lloyd, Thomas Hamilton had two sons:

- Hon. Thomas Hamilton (1758–1774)
Children from His Second Marriage
His second marriage was to Anne Gascoigne. She was the daughter of Sir Charles Gascoigne. With Anne, he had one daughter:
