Thomas Hewson's Journey

Thomas Hewson started his education at Trinity College, a famous university, and finished his first degree in 1803. To become a surgeon, he began a five-year apprenticeship in 1800 with S. Richards. This was like learning on the job from an experienced surgeon. He also studied at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland school and gained practical experience at the Meath Hospital.

Becoming a Surgeon

After his training, Thomas Hewson passed his important medical exam at the College in November 1805. However, he wasn't officially made a member of the College until five years later, in November 1810. Soon after, in January 1811, he was chosen to be part of the Court of Assistants, which was a group that helped run the College.

In 1819, he became a Professor of Surgical Pharmacy. This meant he taught students about the medicines used in surgery. He also became a surgeon at the Meath Hospital around 1809. During this time, he started to become very successful and well-known for his medical skills. People thought he was a very talented surgeon and a pleasant person to be around.
