Sir Thomas Howard (born 1651, died 1701) was an important person in English politics. He was the only son of Sir Robert Howard, who was from a place called Ashtead in Surrey.

Sir Thomas Howard had a busy career in government and as a politician. He held several important jobs during his lifetime.

What was a Teller of the Exchequer?

From 1689 until he passed away, Sir Thomas worked as a Teller of the Exchequer. This was a very important job in the government. A Teller of the Exchequer was like a chief cashier for the country. They were in charge of receiving and paying out money for the government. This job was so important that it even came with a house in Westminster, which is a central part of London where the government buildings are.

Sir Thomas as a Member of Parliament

Sir Thomas Howard was also a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person chosen by voters to represent them in the country's main law-making body, which is called Parliament. He represented two different areas:

  • He was an MP for Castle Rising from 1685 to 1689.
  • He then represented Bletchingley for a while.
  • Later, he became the MP for Castle Rising again, from 1698 until his death.

It's interesting to know that his father, Sir Robert Howard, was also an MP for Castle Rising before him. This shows that public service was a family tradition for the Howards.

Sir Thomas Howard's Family

In 1683, Sir Thomas Howard married Lady Diana. She was the daughter of Francis Newport, 1st Earl of Bradford. Sir Thomas and Lady Diana had three sons and one daughter together. Sadly, only one of their sons lived longer than Sir Thomas, but he also passed away a year later when he was 14 years old.

Their daughter, Diana, got married in 1703 to Edward Ward, 8th Baron Dudley.

Where is Sir Thomas Howard Buried?

Sir Thomas Howard was buried in the church at Ashtead, the same place his family was from. His grave was made by a famous stonemason named William Stanton.
