Who Was Thomas Lawranson?

Thomas Lawranson was born in Ireland. He later moved to London, England. He lived in a place called Great Russell Street in Bloomsbury. This was a busy area in London.

In 1766, Thomas Lawranson joined a group called the Incorporated Society of Artists. This was an important group for artists at the time. By 1774, he became a "fellow" of the society. This meant he was a respected member.

Thomas Lawranson had a son named William Lawranson. William was also an artist. He even painted a portrait of his father, Thomas, and made a special print of it called a mezzotint.

What Kind of Art Did He Make?

Thomas Lawranson was known for his portraits and miniatures. He started showing his artwork to the public in 1760. This was at the very first exhibition held by the Society of Artists. He even showed a portrait of himself!

He continued to exhibit his paintings regularly until 1777. He mostly showed portraits and miniatures. In 1774, he displayed a portrait that he had finished earlier.

Besides paintings, Thomas Lawranson also created a large drawing and print of Greenwich Hospital. This was a famous building in London.
