His Political Career
Thomas Maude was very active in politics.
Member of Parliament
In 1761, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for County Tipperary. This meant he represented his local area in the Irish House of Commons. The Irish House of Commons was like an old parliament or a group of lawmakers in Ireland. He served as an MP for many years, until 1776.
Other Important Roles
Thomas Maude held other important jobs too:
- In 1765, he became the High Sheriff of Tipperary. A High Sheriff was a very important officer in charge of law and order in a county.
- In 1768, he became a member of the Privy Council of Ireland. This was a group of trusted advisors to the King or Queen, helping to make important decisions for Ireland.
Becoming a Baron
On July 18, 1776, Thomas Maude received an even higher honor. He was given the title of Baron de Montalt of Hawarden. This made him a "Peer of Ireland," which is a very high rank in the nobility.
End of His Life
Thomas Maude never got married. When he passed away on May 17, 1777, his title of Baron de Montalt ended because he had no children to pass it on to. His younger brother, Cornwallis Maude, 1st Viscount Hawarden, inherited his family estate and the Baronet title.
