Thomas Newlin (born in 1688, died in 1743) was an English church leader. He was well-known for his sermons and speeches. He spent his life studying and working for the church, becoming a respected preacher in his time.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Newlin was born in Winchester, England, on October 29, 1688. His father, William Newlin, was a rector (a type of priest) at St. Swithin's church in Winchester.

Thomas went to Winchester College from 1702 to 1706. This was a famous school. After that, he joined Magdalen College at Oxford University in 1706. At Oxford, he earned several degrees. He got his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in 1710. He then earned a Master of Arts (M.A.) in 1713. Later, in 1727, he received a Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.). He was also a "fellow" at Magdalen College from 1717 to 1721. A fellow is like a senior member or teacher at the college.

A Well-Known Preacher

Newlin often gave sermons (religious speeches) at the university. He preached in both Latin and English. Most people thought he was a good speaker. However, not everyone agreed. A historian named Thomas Hearne once said that Newlin was a "tolerable preacher" but should not print his sermons.

On September 27, 1720, Newlin became the priest for the church in Upper Beeding, Sussex. This was a position given to him by his college.

Thomas Newlin passed away on February 24, 1743. He was buried in Beeding on March 11 of that year. His gravestone mentions that he defended the Church of England's rules and services. It also spoke of his other good qualities.

His Published Works

Besides his many sermons, Thomas Newlin also wrote and published several books. These books shared his religious thoughts and teachings.

His main works include:

  • The Sinner Enslaved by False Pretences, published in Oxford in 1718.
  • Eighteen Sermons on Several Occasions, published in Oxford in 1720.
  • One and Twenty Sermons on Several Occasions, published in Oxford in 1726.
  • Bishop Parker's "History of his own Time", in Four Books, faithfully translated from the Latin original, published in London in 1727.

Sixteen of Newlin's sermons were later reprinted in a book called Family Lectures in 1791. This book was put together by Vicesimus Knox. Newlin was a "high church" man. This means he strongly believed in the traditions and ceremonies of the Church of England. Even so, he was interested in helping different religious groups get along better.

Family Life

Thomas Newlin was married to Susanna Powell. She was the daughter of Martin and Sarah Powell from Oxford. Sadly, Susanna passed away on September 18, 1732. Thomas and Susanna did not have any children.

In 1724, Thomas and Susanna paid to fix up the old priory of Sele. A priory is a type of monastery. This building was connected to the church position in Beeding.
