Thomas O'Herlahy facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas O'Herlahy (who was also known as O'Herlihy or O'Hiarlaithe) was an important Catholic leader in Ireland. He served as the Bishop of Ross, Ireland (in a place called Rosscarbery) until he passed away in 1579.

Becoming a Bishop and Important Meetings

Thomas O'Herlahy became a bishop around 1560. He was one of only three Irish bishops who traveled to a very important meeting for the Catholic Church called the Council of Trent. This council was held to discuss and decide on many rules and beliefs for the Church.

Trying to Follow New Rules

After the Council of Trent, Bishop O'Herlahy tried his best to make sure the new rules were followed in his area. However, this was a difficult time in Ireland. He had to hide on a small island with his chaplain (a priest who helps a bishop).

Captured and Sent to Prison

Sadly, Bishop O'Herlahy was eventually captured. He was betrayed and handed over to John Perrot, who was a powerful leader in the region of Munster. Perrot sent Bishop O'Herlahy in chains to the Tower of London, which was a famous prison in England.

Freedom and a Return Home

Bishop O'Herlahy was held in prison for about three years and seven months. He was released at the same time as another important church leader, Archbishop Richard Creagh. Bishop O'Herlahy was set free thanks to Cormac Laidir MacCarthy, a powerful local chief from the MacCarthy of Muskerry family.

After his release, Bishop O'Herlahy wanted to go to a country called Flanders. But he had become very sick while in prison, so he decided to return to Ireland instead. He was caught again in Dublin, but he showed his official release papers and was allowed to go. He then traveled to Muskerry, where Chief MacCarthy kept him safe.

Living a Simple Life

Bishop O'Herlahy did not like the fancy and rich lifestyle of the chief. So, he moved away to a small farm and lived a very simple life. Even though he lived quietly, he still visited the churches in his area every year. On important holidays, he would lead church services and give sermons (religious talks) in a nearby church.

Bishop O'Herlahy suffered from a sickness, but he continued his work until he was about 60 or 70 years old. He was buried at Kilcrea Friary in County Cork, Ireland.
