Early Life and Military Career
When Thomas Roper was young, he fought in wars to help England take control of Ireland. He was a brave and skilled soldier. On September 16, 1603, he was made a knight at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin. This was a great honor. He also joined a special group of advisors to the King in Ireland. This group was called the Privy Council of Ireland. From 1608 until he died, he was in charge of Castle Maine.
Important Titles and Land
On November 10, 1626, King Charles I gave Thomas Roper land and the area of Baltinglass. This included a monastery. Then, on June 27, 1627, he received two special noble titles. He became Viscount Baltinglass and Baron of Bantry in the Peerage of Ireland. These titles showed his high rank and importance.
Family Life
Thomas Roper married Ann Harington. Her parents were Sir Henry Harington and Ruth Pilkington. Thomas and Ann had four children together. They had two sons and two daughters. Thomas Roper was buried on February 20, 1638, at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, Dublin. His second son, who was also named Thomas, took over his titles after he passed away.
