Thomas Rowney (born April 30, 1668 – died August 31, 1727) was an important British politician. He was a member of the Tory party. Thomas Rowney served in the English House of Commons and later the British House of Commons for many years, representing the city of Oxford.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Rowney was born on April 30, 1668. He was the only son of Thomas Rowney and Catherine Bateman. His father was a lawyer who moved to Oxford around 1650. He became quite wealthy and owned a lot of land around Oxford.

Young Thomas went to school in Shilton, near Burford. This was a special school that also taught other famous people. These included a future Lord High Treasurer, a Lord High Chancellor, and a Lord Chief Justice.

After school, Thomas went to St John's College, Oxford in 1684. He then studied law at the Inner Temple in 1686. He became a lawyer in 1694.

Public Service and Wealth

Thomas Rowney served as the High Sheriff of Oxfordshire from 1691 to 1692. A High Sheriff was a very important local official. In 1694, he inherited a lot of land and property from his father. This made him very wealthy. He owned land in several counties, including Berkshire, Warwickshire, and Worcestershire.

For most of his life, Thomas Rowney was a respected person in Oxford. He knew many important Tory politicians and university professors. In 1717, he was chosen as a "barge commissioner." This was an old role for important citizens. He also played a big part in planning the rebuilding of Oxford Town Hall. His son, also named Thomas, saw the project finished in 1751.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In 1695, Thomas Rowney decided to run for Parliament in Oxford. He was supported by the Tory party. He won the election after a tough campaign. There were even some angry crowds who nearly attacked his home.

Thomas Rowney continued to be elected without anyone running against him in 1701. He served as a Member of Parliament for Oxford until 1722. After that, his eldest son, Thomas, took over his seat in Parliament.

Family Life

Thomas Rowney married Elizabeth Noel on May 27, 1691. She was from London. They lived in Oxford in a beautiful house that was rebuilt in 1702. They had three sons and one daughter.

Their children included:

  • Thomas Rowney (born around 1693 – died 1759). He later married Ms. Trollope.
  • Elizabeth Rowney, who married Sir Clobery Noel, 5th Baronet in 1714.

Thomas Rowney passed away on August 31, 1727. He was buried in the church of St Giles in Oxford.
