Thomas Tyndall (born 1723 – died 1794) was an important English businessman from Bristol. He worked as a merchant, which means he bought and sold goods, and also as a banker, managing money for others. His family had strong connections to the historical slave trade.
Early Life and Family Business
Thomas Tyndall was born in 1723. His parents were Onesiphorus Tyndall and Elizabeth Cowles. He was baptised in a Unitarian church.
Thomas's father was one of the people who started the Old Bank in Bristol. When his father passed away in 1757, Thomas inherited a lot of money and also took over his father's role as a partner in the bank. This meant he became an important part of the banking business.
His uncle, William Tyndall, was involved in the slave trade in Jamaica. William owned a large farm, called a plantation, with his business partner Richard Assheton.
Royal Fort House
Thomas Tyndall had a beautiful house built for himself in Bristol. It was called the Royal Fort House. This house was finished around 1767. Today, the Royal Fort House is part of the University of Bristol.
Family Connections
Thomas Tyndall's daughter, Caroline, married into another family called the Brights. This family was also involved in the historical slave trade.
