Sir Thomas White (born March 25, 1507 – died November 2, 1566) was an important English politician. He lived during the time of Queen Mary I and helped run the country.

Who Was Sir Thomas White?

Thomas White was born in 1507. His father, Robert White, passed away when Thomas was almost 14 years old. After his father's death, a man named John Morys became his guardian. John Morys was in charge of a special park in Farnham, Surrey.

Thomas White later married Agnes, who was also from Farnham. They had a very large family with 14 sons and 6 daughters. Sadly, some of their children did not live to be adults.

Sir Thomas White's Career

Sir Thomas White studied law at a famous place called the Inner Temple. This helped him prepare for a life in government.

Working for the Bishopric

From 1538 until he died, he was the treasurer for the bishopric of Winchester. A bishopric is an area managed by a bishop, a high-ranking church official. He also looked after Farnham Castle in Surrey from 1540 until his death.

Serving in Parliament

Sir Thomas White was elected to Parliament seven times. He represented Hampshire as a Knight of the Shire. This means he was chosen by the people of Hampshire to speak for them in Parliament. He served in Parliament between 1547 and 1559.

Working for the Queen

He was a strong Catholic, which was important during the reign of Queen Mary I. On October 2, 1553, the day after Queen Mary I was crowned, he was knighted at Westminster. This means he was given the title "Sir."

From 1553 to 1558, he worked as a Master of Requests for Queen Mary I. This job involved helping people who had special requests or complaints for the Queen.

His Later Life

Sir Thomas White passed away in London in 1566. His wife, Dame Agnes, died a few years later in Canterbury in 1570 or 1571. They were buried at South Warnborough.
