Thomas Wood became an officer in the Grenadier Guards. This is a famous part of the British Army. He led the 3rd Battalion of the Grenadier Guards during the early parts of the Crimean War (1853–1856). He rose through the ranks to become a General.
In 1837, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Middlesex. He held this position for ten years, until 1847. In 1841, he was also made a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a special honor for people who have done important work in science.
