Thomas Wynn, 1st Baron Newborough (born in 1736, died October 12, 1807) was an important British politician. He was also known as Sir Thomas Wynn, 3rd Baronet for a few years. He served in the House of Commons, which is a part of the British Parliament, for many years between 1761 and 1807.
Thomas Wynn's Early Life and Travels
Thomas Wynn was the son of Sir John Wynn, 2nd Baronet. When he was a young man, he went on a special trip called the "Grand Tour." This trip was popular in the 1700s. Young, wealthy people would travel around Europe, especially to Italy. They would visit famous cities, see ancient ruins, and learn about art and culture. Thomas Wynn took his Grand Tour between 1759 and 1760.
Thomas Wynn's Political Journey
Thomas Wynn had a long career in politics. He was a Member of Parliament, which means he was elected to represent people in the British government. He served in the House of Commons, where laws are debated and made.
- He represented an area called Carnarvonshire from 1761 to 1774.
- Later, he represented St Ives from 1775 to 1780.
- Finally, he represented Beaumaris from 1796 until he died in 1807.
Besides being a Member of Parliament, Thomas Wynn also held other important roles. He was the Lord Lieutenant of Carnarvonshire from 1761 to 1781. A Lord Lieutenant is the King or Queen's personal representative in a county. He was also in charge of the Carnarvon Militia, which was a local military group.
Becoming Baron Newborough
In 1773, Thomas Wynn inherited the title of Baronet from his father. This meant he became "Sir Thomas Wynn, 3rd Baronet." A few years later, in 1776, he received an even higher honor. He was made a Baron Newborough in the Peerage of Ireland. This meant he became a "Lord" and was known as Lord Newborough.
Lord Newborough passed away in October 1807. His eldest son from his second marriage, named Thomas, took over his titles.
