Where is Thorp?

Thorp covers an area of about 35.2 square miles (which is about 91.1 square kilometers). All of this area is land, meaning there are no large lakes or rivers within the town's official boundaries.

Thorp's Early Days

The area that became the town of Thorp was first mapped out by the U.S. government in the summer of 1847. A few years later, in 1849, another team of surveyors walked through the woods and swamps. They marked all the important corners of the land sections using chains and special compasses.

After their work, the main surveyor described the area. He said that most of the land was flat and wet. Only a small part in the southeast was good for farming. He also noted that two streams flowed from north to south in the eastern part, which could be used to power mills. There were many good pine trees, but they were spread out. The whole area was covered with thick, young trees of many different kinds.
