Thorpe Island is a small island in Queensland, Australia. It is part of the Family Islands group. This group of islands is located near Dunk Island in the Cassowary Coast Region.
Thorpe Island is about 15 kilometers (9 miles) east of a place called Tully Heads. People also know this island by another name: Timana Island.
Discovering the Family Islands
In 1770, a famous explorer named Captain James Cook sailed past these islands. He decided to give them a special name: "The Family Group of Islands."
He named the biggest island "The Father Isle," which we now call Dunk Island. The second largest island he called "The Mother Isle," which is now Bedarra Island. The smaller islands were like the children of the family. Timana Island, which is Thorpe Island, was like the baby of the group. There were also islands he called "the Twins" and "the Triplets."
Who Owns Thorpe Island?
Thorpe Island is a special place because it is privately owned. This means it belongs to an individual or a family, not the government. There is only one house on the island.
It is one of the few islands in Australia that is owned freehold. This means the owner has complete ownership of the land and everything on it, forever. It's like owning your house and yard completely, without having to rent or lease it from anyone else.
