Tibor Antalpéter (born February 4, 1930 – died September 15, 2012) was a talented Hungarian athlete. He was famous for playing volleyball for his country. Later in his life, he became an important diplomat. He served as Hungary's Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1990 to 1995.

Tibor Antalpéter's Life Story

Tibor Antalpéter was born in Budapest, Hungary, on February 4, 1930. His parents were István Antalpéter and Viktória Dobai. In 1956, he married Adél Mátha. They had two daughters, Katalin and Sára.

He went to the Calvinist Grammar School in Budapest for his high school studies. He then studied at the Karl Marx University of Economic Sciences. He finished his university studies in 1954.

A Star Volleyball Player

Tibor Antalpéter was a dedicated volleyball player. He played for the Csepel SC team from 1948 to 1960. He also played for the Hungarian national team. He was part of the national team from 1947 until 1956. During this time, he played in 64 international matches.

His Best Volleyball Achievements

Tibor Antalpéter competed in several big tournaments.

  • In 1949, he played in the World Volleyball Championship. His team finished in seventh place.
  • His best result was a third-place finish in the European Volleyball Championship in 1950.
  • Two years later, in 1952, the national team came in fifth place at the World Championship.
  • He also helped his club team, Csepel SC, win the National Championship seven times.

From Player to Coach and Leader

After his playing career, Antalpéter became a coach. He coached the adult team of Csepel SC from 1960 to 1969. Under his coaching, the team won the National Championship two more times.

He also took on leadership roles in Hungarian volleyball.

  • From 1966, he was a Board Member of the Hungarian Volleyball Federation.
  • He led the Coaches' Committee from 1966 to 1970.
  • He served as Vice President of the Federation from 1970 to 1973.
  • Later, he became the President of the Federation from 1981 to 1986.
  • He was also a member of the Hungarian Olympic Committee between 1980 and 1986.

Becoming an Ambassador

After his career in sports, Tibor Antalpéter took on a very different role. He became a diplomat. A diplomat represents their country in another country. An ambassador is the highest-ranking diplomat.

Tibor Antalpéter served as the Hungarian Ambassador to the United Kingdom. He held this important position from 1990 to 1995. This meant he was Hungary's official representative in the UK. He worked to build good relationships between the two countries.
