Tibors de Sarenom (born around 1130 – died after 1198) was a very important woman in medieval times. She was one of the first known female poets and musicians from a region called Occitania, in what is now southern France. These female poets were known as trobairitz. Tibors was active when male poets, called troubadours, were very popular. She wrote poems and songs in the Occitan language.
Who Was Tibors de Sarenom?
Tibors de Sarenom was a noblewoman from Provence, a beautiful area in southern France. She was known for being polite, smart, and graceful. People admired her because she was good at writing poems. She was also known for being in love and being loved in return. Many important people in her region respected her.
It can be a bit tricky for historians to find out all the details about Tibors. This is because many women in Occitania during her time were named Tibors!
Tibors' Family and Life
Tibors was the daughter of Guilhem d'Omelas and Tibors d'Aurenga. Her mother brought the castle of Sarenom into the family. This castle was probably Sérignan-du-Comtat in Provence.
Tibors had a younger brother named Raimbaut d'Orange. He grew up to be a very famous troubadour himself. Tibors' mother, Tibors d'Aurenga, passed away around 1150. In her will, she asked Tibors and her husband, Bertran dels Baus, to look after young Raimbaut.
Tibors was married twice. Her first husband was Goufroy de Mornas, but he died early. She then married Bertran dels Baus. With Bertran, she had three sons:
- Uc
- Bertran
- Guilhem, who also became a troubadour like his uncle.
It was once thought that Tibors died soon after her husband, around 1181 or 1182. However, a document from her son Uc, dated in 1198, mentions getting "advice of his mother Tibors." This means she was still alive and giving advice much later than people first thought!
Tibors' Poetry
Sadly, only one part of a poem by Tibors has survived. It's a single stanza from a type of song called a canso. A canso was a love song, usually about courtly love. Even though we only have a small piece of her work, Tibors was important enough to be mentioned in another poem written much later, between 1220 and 1245. In that poem, she is shown as a judge in a poetry contest!
Here is the only surviving part of Tibors' poem, with its English translation:
