How the Park Started
A Gift to the City
The park was created in 1962 by a man named Frank P. Pellegrino. He was the boss, or CEO, of a big company called the International Hat Company in St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Pellegrino wanted to build the park to remember his good friend and business partner, George Tilles Jr.. George Tilles Jr. used to be the boss of the same company.
Why Oran Was Chosen
The International Hat Company had a hat factory in Oran. This factory was the biggest employer in Oran for many years. It was also one of the largest employers in all of Southeastern Missouri. Because of this, Mr. Pellegrino chose Oran for the park. He wanted to give something back to the people who worked for his company in Oran.
How the Park Gets Money
Mr. Pellegrino asked the city of Oran for one thing. He wanted the city to use tax money to pay for the park. This money would help build new fun things and keep the park looking nice. The idea was put to a vote, and 93 percent of the people in Oran said yes! This meant the city would use taxes to help the park.
