About Tim Skold
Early Life and Music Beginnings
Tim Skold was born in Skövde, Sweden, in 1966. He grew up in a town called Timmersdala. When he was 12, he got his first bass guitar. He was inspired by the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" music style. He played in different bands that covered popular songs.
Later, he met a guitarist named Harry "Harry Cody" Kemppainen. They became good friends and dreamed of becoming rock stars in the United States. Tim studied Process Engineering for two years. After that, he worked in a factory making military equipment. He also joined the army for a short time. Even in the army, he practiced his bass guitar whenever he could. After leaving the army, he worked many different jobs while still playing music with Harry.
Forming Kingpin
In the early 1980s, Tim and Harry formed a glam metal band called Kingpin in Sweden. They loved the flashy hard rock bands from Los Angeles and some UK bands. They soon found a singer, Zinny J. Zan, and a drummer, Stixx Galore.
Kingpin released their first song, "Shout It Out", in 1987. It became a number 1 hit in Sweden! The next year, they released their only album, Welcome to Bop City. After this, the band moved to Los Angeles, USA.
Shotgun Messiah and New Sounds
In Los Angeles, Kingpin signed with Relativity Records. They had to change their name to Shotgun Messiah because another band already had the name Kingpin. They re-released their album Welcome To Bop City as their first international album, Shotgun Messiah, in 1989. This album sold almost 500,000 copies and made it into the top 100 on the Billboard charts. Their music videos were often shown on MTV's Headbanger's Ball.
Later, the band's singer left. Tim Skold then became the lead singer, and they hired a new bass player. In 1991, Shotgun Messiah released their second album, Second Coming. This album was very popular.
In 1992, they released a short album called I Want More. It had some new songs and new versions of old ones. After this, the drummer and bass player left the band.
Tim and Harry went back to Sweden to record the third Shotgun Messiah album, Violent New Breed. This album had a more industrial sound, which was a new style for them. It was released in 1993, but music tastes were changing, and grunge music was becoming very popular. Because of this, Tim and Harry decided to end Shotgun Messiah. Tim then started his own solo music project.
SKOLD: Tim's Solo Journey
After Shotgun Messiah, Tim Skold started his solo career. He wrote all the songs and played all the instruments himself. His first solo album, Skold, came out in 1996. Some of his songs from this album were used in movies like Disturbing Behavior and Universal Soldier: The Return. One song, "Chaos," was even in the PlayStation game Twisted Metal 4.
Around 2002, Tim recorded another solo album. He made only 10 copies of a demo version. Six of these songs, including "Dead God," were shared online without his permission. These songs were officially released in 2022 as the album Dead God.
In 2009, Tim released new songs like "I Will Not Forget." His second official solo album, Anomie, was released in 2011.
His album The Undoing was planned for 2014 but was released in 2016. To support this album, Tim went on "The Undoing Tour 2016" across the United States. He played songs from his whole career, like "Personal Jesus" and "Chaos."
In 2019, SKOLD released the album Never Is Now. In 2021, he released Dies Irae. In 2023, he released Seven Heads with the song Rat King. He also has an album called Caught In The Throes planned for 2025.
Working with KMFDM and MDFMK
After his first solo work, Tim Skold joined the band KMFDM in 1997. He helped write and sing the song "Anarchy," which became very popular in clubs. He also became a producer and engineer for the band.
In 1999, KMFDM ended for a short time. Tim and KMFDM's founder, Sascha Konietzko, started a new band called MDFMK. They released one album, MDFMK, in 2000. This band had a more electronic and futuristic sound. Their song "Missing Time" was used in the animated movie Heavy Metal 2000.
In 2002, the band members reformed KMFDM and released the album Attak. Tim then left KMFDM to work on another project.
In 2009, Tim Skold and Sascha Konietzko released an album together called Skold vs. KMFDM. Tim also helped with KMFDM's album Blitz that same year.
Joining Marilyn Manson
Tim Skold started working with Marilyn Manson by producing the song "Tainted Love" in 2001. This song was in the movie Not Another Teen Movie. Manson and Skold also created music for the movie Resident Evil in 2002.
Tim officially joined Marilyn Manson in 2002 as the bassist. He also produced, edited, and played many instruments for the album The Golden Age of Grotesque. He was a very important part of the band's sound.
For the band's 2004 album, Lest We Forget: The Best Of, Tim produced and played guitar on the cover song "Personal Jesus". In 2006, Manson and Skold covered the song "This Is Halloween" for The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack.
Tim also worked on Marilyn Manson's album Eat Me, Drink Me, which was released in 2007. He played guitar on the band's world tour that year. In 2008, Tim left the band.
