About Tim Skold

Tim's Early Life

Tim Skold grew up in a town called Timmersdala in Sweden. He has a sister named Linda. His parents were very open-minded. His father was a drummer who played music part-time.

When Tim was 11, he joined a "playback" band. This means the band pretended to play along to recorded music. Tim's band would perform at school events. They played songs by bands like Kiss, Bowie, and Sweet.

At age 12, Tim rented a bass guitar. By 13, he was playing and singing in his first real band. Later, he met guitarist Harry Cody at a party. They became good friends and worked together on music for many years. Their big dream was to go to the US and become rock stars.

When he was 17, Tim studied Process Engineering. After two years, he moved into his own apartment. He got a job making military equipment in a factory. Six months later, he joined the army. He would sneak his bass guitar into the shower rooms to practice at night. On weekends, he rehearsed with Harry Cody. After the army, Tim worked many different jobs. He was a library assistant, a Volvo employee, and a gardener.

At 19, Tim and Harry convinced a Swedish record company to let them make a record. They wanted to use it as a demo for the American music market. Their band was first called Shylock. Soon, their hard work led them to form the band Kingpin.

Kingpin Band

In the early 1980s, Tim Skold and Harry Cody started the glam metal band Kingpin. They were from Skövde, Sweden. They loved the flashy rock bands from Los Angeles and UK bands like Sigue Sigue Sputnik. They added singer Zinny J. Zan and drummer Stixx Galore to the band.

Kingpin's first song was "Shout It Out" in 1987. It became a number one hit in Sweden. They released their only album, Welcome to Bop City, in 1988. After that, they moved to Los Angeles.

Shotgun Messiah

Kingpin signed with Relativity Records. They changed their name to Shotgun Messiah because another band already used the name Kingpin. They re-released Welcome To Bop City as their first international album in 1989. It was called Shotgun Messiah. The album sold nearly 500,000 copies. It also reached the top 100 on the Billboard charts. Their music videos for "Don't Care 'Bout Nothin'" and "Shout It Out" were often shown on MTV's Headbanger's Ball.

While working on their next album, singer Zinny was asked to leave the band. Harry Cody suggested that Tim Skold become the lead singer. They hired a new bass player, Bobby Lycon. The band released their second album, Second Coming, in October 1991. It received great reviews. The album had two popular songs: "Heartbreak Blvd." and "Living Without You".

In November 1992, Shotgun Messiah released a five-song EP called I Want More. It included two new punk cover songs. It also had a re-recorded "Babylon" punk cover. There was also a new version of "I Want More" and an acoustic "Nobody's Home." Soon after, Stixx and Lycon left the band.

Tim Skold and Harry Cody went back to Sweden. They recorded the third Shotgun Messiah album, Violent New Breed. This album had a more industrial sound. It was released in September 1993. The album did not do as well because grunge music was very popular then. This led Tim and Harry to end the band. Tim then started his own solo music project.

SKOLD Solo Project

After Shotgun Messiah broke up, Tim Skold started his solo career. He wrote all the songs and played all the instruments himself. His first album, Skold, came out in 1996 through RCA. Scott Humphrey helped produce the album. To promote his album, Skold and his live band went on a short tour with Genitorturers.

Some songs from the Skold album were used in movies. "Hail Mary" was in Disturbing Behavior. "Chaos" was in Universal Soldier: The Return and the PlayStation game Twisted Metal 4. During his solo career, Skold also made remixes for bands like Prong. He also met KMFDM leader Sascha Konietzko during this time.

Around 2002, Skold recorded another album. He said he made a demo with only 10 copies. Six of these songs were shared online without his permission. These songs were "Burn", "Dead God", "I Hate", "Believe", "The Point", and "Don't Pray". This demo is known as the Dead God EP. Skold later said it was called Disrupting the Orderly Routine of the Institution. All 10 songs were officially released in 2022 as the album Dead God.

In November 2009, new SKOLD songs were released online. These included "I Will Not Forget" and "A Dark Star". Skold's website announced a new solo album for early 2010. The album, Anomie, was finally released on 10 May 2011.

His album The Undoing was planned for 2014. But it was delayed until 2016 when SKOLD worked with Metropolis Records again. To support this album, SKOLD went on "The Undoing Tour 2016". He toured the western United States in May 2016. He also toured across North America in November and December 2016.

In 2018, SKOLD covered the song "White As Chalk" by Leæther Strip. This song was on the album Heært Combine.

SKOLD released the album Never Is Now on 5 April 2019. He released Dies Irae on 5 March 2021. In 2022, the album Dead God was properly released. On 28 July 2023, SKOLD released the album Seven Heads. It included the song Rat King. All these albums were released through Cleopatra Records.

KMFDM and MDFMK

After his solo project, Skold joined the band KMFDM in 1997. His first work with KMFDM was on the album Symbols. He wrote and sang the song "Anarchy," which became very popular in clubs. He also made remixes of this song. His next album with KMFDM was Adios, released in 1999. Skold became more involved in the band. He was a co-vocalist, co-writer, and bassist. He also helped produce and program the music with KMFDM's founder Sascha Konietzko.

Because of problems within the band, Konietzko and Skold ended KMFDM in 1999. They started a new band called MDFMK the next year. They released one album, MDFMK, in 2000. The band, which included Lucia Cifarelli, had a more "futuristic" sound. It mixed less industrial rock with drum & bass, trance, and europop. All three members sang on MDFMK songs. Their song "Missing Time" was used in the animated movie Heavy Metal 2000.

In 2002, the three members reformed KMFDM with Raymond Watts. They released the album Attak. After this, Skold left the band. He could not join KMFDM's 2002 tour because he was busy producing Marilyn Manson's album. However, he did make two guest appearances at shows in June.

On 16 December 2008, the KMFDM website announced that Skold and Konietzko would release an album together. It was called Skold vs. KMFDM. The album came out on 24 February 2009. Skold also helped with KMFDM's album Blitz, released on 24 March 2009.

Other Bands and Projects

Skold played guitar for Taime Downe's band The Newlydeads in 2000. He also joined ohGr, a project by Skinny Puppy singer Nivek Ogre, as a bassist for their 2001 tour.

Marilyn Manson

Tim Skold started working with Marilyn Manson as a producer. He produced the song "Tainted Love". This song was in the 2001 movie Not Another Teen Movie. Manson and Skold then worked on the music for the movie Resident Evil, released in 2002. Several songs were on the movie's soundtrack.

Skold officially joined Marilyn Manson in 2002. This happened after the bassist Twiggy Ramirez left. Skold became the band's bassist. He also produced, edited, and created artwork for their album The Golden Age of Grotesque. He also played guitar, keyboards, accordion, and programmed drums for the album.

Manson described Skold as "the power that attitude brings to an album." On the band's 2004 album, Lest We Forget: The Best Of, Skold produced and played lead guitar. He also sang backup vocals on their cover of "Personal Jesus". This song was also released as a single. In 2006, Manson and Skold covered "This Is Halloween" for The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack. Skold handled the music, and Manson sang.

They also started working on Marilyn Manson's sixth album, Eat Me, Drink Me. This album was released worldwide on 5 June 2007.

On 9 January 2008, Marilyn Manson announced that Skold had left the band. Former bassist Twiggy Ramirez returned to take his place. In November 2021, it was reported that Skold was working with Manson again. However, Skold's contributions did not appear on Manson's album One Assassination Under God - Chapter 1.

Doctor Midnight & The Mercy Cult
