Time-Life Building (Chicago) facts for kids
The Time-Life Building is a tall building in Chicago, Illinois. It stands 404 feet (about 123 meters) high and has 30 floors. Famous architect Harry Weese designed it, and it was finished in 1969.
What is the Time-Life Building?
This building is located at 541 North Fairbanks Court in an area of Chicago called the Near North Side. When it was built, it was one of the first buildings in the United States to use a special kind of elevator system.
Cool Features of the Building
The Time-Life Building uses something called double-deck elevators. This means there are two elevator cars stacked on top of each other!
- If you want to go to an odd-numbered floor (like 1, 3, 5), you use the lower part of the elevator from the ground floor.
- If you want to go to an even-numbered floor (like 2, 4, 6), you use the upper part of the elevator from a different level.
This helps people get to their floors faster, especially in a busy building.
Who Uses It Now?
Today, the Time-Life Building is the main office for the Chicago Park District. They are in charge of all the parks and fun activities in Chicago.
