Rodrigo Londoño Echeverri was born on January 22, 1959. He is best known by his special names, Timoleón Jiménez and Timochenko. He is a politician from Colombia and used to be the main leader of a group called the FARC-EP. After a peace agreement, this group became a political party named Commons, and Rodrigo Londoño is now its president.

Early Life and Education

Rodrigo Londoño was born in 1959 in Calarcá, Colombia. His family was a poor farming family. His father believed in communist ideas.

After finishing high school, Rodrigo joined the youth group of the Colombian Communist Party. He also received medical training.

Rodrigo Londoño joined the FARC-EP in 1976 when he was 17 years old. He said he admired the idea of armed struggle and thought it would be a quick way to make changes, like what happened in Cuba.

Becoming a Leader

In November 2011, Rodrigo Londoño became the main leader of the FARC-EP. He took over after the previous leader, Alfonso Cano, passed away. Before becoming the top leader, Rodrigo Londoño was in charge of about 800 people in a part of the FARC-EP called the Middle Magdalena Bloc of the FARC-EP. His nickname "Timochenko" is thought to be a reference to a Soviet military leader.

The Peace Process

Rodrigo Londoño played a very important role in the Colombian peace process. He helped make sure the FARC-EP stayed committed to talking with the Colombian government. In November 2012, he announced that discussions with the government would begin.

During this time, he had some health problems, including a heart attack in 2015. In November 2016, the Colombian government and the FARC-EP reached a peace agreement. This agreement meant that the FARC-EP would stop being a rebel group and become a political party instead.

Political Career

Starting a New Party

In July 2017, Rodrigo Londoño had some health issues and went to the hospital. A month later, in August 2017, he led a meeting to start the new political party. This party was first called the "Common Alternative Revolutionary Force" (FARC), but later changed its name to Commons.

On September 1, 2017, Rodrigo Londoño gave a speech. On October 31, 2017, the FARC party officially became a legal political party in Colombia.

Running for President

On November 1, 2017, Rodrigo Londoño announced that he would run for president in the 2018 Colombian presidential election. At that time, he did not have much support from the public. In March 2018, he had more heart problems and had to have surgery. Because of his health, he decided to end his presidential campaign.
