Tol'able David is a famous silent movie from 1921. It stars Richard Barthelmess and was directed by Henry King. Silent movies don't have spoken words, but they use music and text on screen to tell the story. This film is based on a story by Joseph Hergesheimer. It was made by Inspiration Pictures.
The movie was very popular when it came out. Photoplay Magazine gave it a special "medal of honor" in 1921. Years later, in 2007, Tol'able David was chosen for the United States National Film Registry. The Library of Congress picks movies for this registry that are important for culture, history, or art. This means the film is considered a valuable part of American movie history.
The Story of David
The movie tells the story of a young boy named David Kinemon. He lives in West Virginia with his family, who are tenant farmers. This means they farm land owned by someone else. David really wants to be seen as a grown-up by his family and neighbors.
Becoming a Man
Everyone around David keeps reminding him that he is still just a boy. They often say he is only "tol'able," meaning he's okay but not quite a man yet. David wants to prove that he is strong and responsible. He wants to show everyone he can handle grown-up challenges.
Facing Trouble
David gets his chance to prove himself when some outlaws move onto a nearby farm. These bad guys cause problems for the community. David must find the courage to stand up to them. This difficult situation helps him show everyone, and himself, that he truly is a man. The film shows his journey from a boy to a hero.
