A cool spot nearby is Tomarata Lake. People love going there for fun activities like boating, water skiing, kayaking, and swimming. History
Tomarata Lake formed about 12,000 years ago. Imagine huge sand dunes building up along the coast. These dunes blocked water from flowing into the sea, creating the lake. This means no rivers or streams feed into Tomarata Lake. Instead, its water comes from rain and water that slowly seeps through the sand.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Tomarata was a place where people dug for kauri gum. Kauri gum is a fossilized resin from kauri trees, used to make things like varnish.
