What Happened in the 2006 Power Cut?
On July 26, 2006, something unexpected happened. A big power cut hit Soho, London, where the TV channels were run. This was during a very hot summer with thunderstorms.
The power cut caused a lot of confusion for TV viewers. Different channels started showing the wrong programs! For example, Cartoon Network shows appeared on Toonami and Boomerang. Some channels even went off air for a while.
Viewers who could still watch saw a special message. It said, "We apologise for the disruption to this programme due to technical problems." It also promised that normal shows would return soon. Toonami even had its own funny message: "Sorry! Toonami is broken, we'll be right back as soon as we fix it."
How Toonami Looked Over Time
Toonami changed its look a few times during its years on air. These changes are called "rebrands." They often included new logos and short videos shown between programs, called "idents."
First Look (2003)
When Toonami first launched in 2003, its idents were really cool. They often showed the Toonami logo in a special "Sensor Room." Sometimes, you would see the face of TOM, a robot character. A voice would quietly whisper "Toonami."
There were also short clips in the Sensor Room. These clips showed off the newest games, movies, and TV shows. TOM was known for being a bit awkward but excited. Another character, Sara, was also in these clips. She often acted as the sensible one next to TOM.
Second Look (2004)
In 2004, Toonami got a new look and TOM was no longer part of the idents. The new idents had a light blue background. They were similar to the idents used by another channel called CNX.
These idents showed a black rectangle that slowly filled with white. Then, the white part would change into the Toonami logo. It was a simpler, cleaner look for the channel.
Final Look (2006)
Toonami changed its look one last time in 2006. This time, the logo was set against a bright azure (sky blue) background. Colorful monsters would play around with the Toonami logo.
When the channel closed, there was a special shutdown ident. It showed the "Too" part of the Toonami logo pushing away the "nami" part. Then, the logo changed into the Cartoon Network Too logo. This happened on the same light blue background from the 2004 idents.
