Top Naeff (born 1878, died 1953) was an important Dutch writer. She wrote novels and plays that were popular in her time. Her stories often explored the feelings and challenges of young people.
About Top Naeff's Life
Top Naeff was the only child in her family. She did not find school easy, especially secondary school. Later, she married a doctor.
Naeff wrote her first novel, School Idylls, in 1900. This book was about a teenage orphan named Jet van Marle. Jet was raised by an aunt and uncle who were not very loving. The story was inspired by other writers like Louisa May Alcott and Tine van Berken.
In 1912, Naeff wrote another important novel called At the Gate. In this book, the main character, Liesbeth van Landschot, has strong feelings for a man who doesn't know how she feels. This story shows how challenging unshared feelings can be.
Besides writing novels, Top Naeff also reviewed many plays. Her reviews appeared in a newspaper called De Groene Amsterdammer. She also became the editor of a magazine called Elsevier's Geïllustreerd Maandschrift. She took over this job from her friend, Herman Robbers.
