Topside is a special old summer house in Brooksville, Maine. It was built in 1918 by an architect named William Crutchfield from Tennessee. This house looks different from most homes in Maine because it's made of logs, like houses you might see in southern mountains. You can find it on the north side of Walker Pond, near Maine State Route 176. Topside was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, which means it's an important historical site.
About Topside Estate
Topside is found in eastern Brooksville. It sits on land that goes from State Route 176 all the way to Walker Pond. Walker Pond is a big lake near Sedgwick.
How Topside Looks
The main house is very close to the water. It's built from large, hand-cut spruce logs. The house has 1.5 stories and a strong stone base. Its roof looks like a traditional thatched roof, even though it's made of asphalt shingles.
The house has special roof sections called "clipped-gable projections" at its corners. These are on the side facing the water. On the land side, there are two "shed-roof dormers." These are windows that stick out from the roof. All the windows in the house have a diamond pattern.
The metal parts, like hinges and latches, were made by hand. A blacksmith worked right at the building site to create these unique pieces.
Other Buildings at Topside
The main house is connected to two other buildings. A stone walkway links them together. These other buildings are also made from similar materials, like logs and stone.
One building is a guest house with three bedrooms. It has only one story. The other building is three stories tall. It holds a water tower and more rooms for guests.
Topside's History
The Topside property was built in 1918 for the Patten family. The main idea for the design came from William Crutchfield, an architect from Tennessee. Local workers from Maine built the house. The architect did not watch over the building process. The total cost to build Topside was about $60,000.
