About the Malmuerta Tower
This special tower is known as an albarrana tower. This means it was built a little bit away from the main city wall, but still connected to it. This design helped protect the city gates even better.
When Was It Built?
The Torre de la Malmuerta was built a long time ago, between the years 1406 and 1408. King Henry III of Castile ordered it to be built. He was the king of a powerful kingdom in Spain at that time.
Why Was It Built?
The main reason for building this tower was to protect two important city gates: the Rincón gate and the Colodro gate. Before this tower, there was an older building from the Almohad period, which was a time when a group called the Almohads ruled parts of Spain. The new tower was built on top of or near this older structure.
What Was Its Other Use?
After its time as a defense tower, the Torre de la Malmuerta was also used as a prison. It held important people, like nobles, who had been arrested.
What Does It Look Like?
The tower has a unique shape. If you look at it from above, it has eight sides, making it an octagonal shape. It also has an arch connected to it, which is like a curved doorway or passage.
