Torrey Harris's Political Journey
Becoming a State Representative
A state representative is someone elected to speak for a group of people in their state's government. They help make laws for the state. Torrey Harris ran for this important job in 2020.
The 2020 Election Race
In 2020, Torrey Harris decided to run against the person who already held the seat, John DeBerry. Mr. DeBerry had changed his political party to become an independent candidate. Torrey Harris won this election with a large number of votes, getting 77.3% of them. This meant he would represent the 90th district.
The 2022 Election and New District
Before the 2022 election, the areas that representatives serve were changed. This process is called redistricting. Torrey Harris's district changed from the 90th to the 91st. This new district includes parts of Midtown and other neighborhoods in east Memphis.
First, he had to win a primary election. This is when people from the same political party vote to choose who will represent them in the main election. After winning the primary, he ran in the general election. In this election, he did not have any opponents, so he won easily and continued to serve his district.
