A Sweet History
How the Rose Cake Began
The Torta delle Rose has a long and interesting history, going back over 500 years! It was first made around the year 1490.
Back then, a very important lady named Isabella d'Este became the Marchioness of Mantua. This meant she was like a princess or queen of the city. She married Francesco II Gonzaga, who was the leader of Mantua.
Isabella loved good food, and she brought new cooking ideas to Mantua from another part of Italy called Emilia. She had a famous cook named Cristoforo di Messisbugo. He worked for the leaders of Ferrara, another important city. It is believed that Cristoforo di Messisbugo created the Torta delle Rose especially for Isabella d'Este!
