Toti Martínez de Lezea (born in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, in 1949) is a Spanish writer. She writes books in both Spanish and Basque. Toti is also a skilled translator, meaning she can change words from one language to another. She knows French, English, and German. Besides writing, she has been a TV presenter and an actor. She even helped start a theatre group called Kukubiltxo.

When she was younger, Toti started her university studies. She moved to a region called Goierri in Gipuzkoa. There, she spent a year learning the Basque language.

Toti is very good at languages. She studied French for four years in France. After that, she spent three years in England learning English. She earned special degrees for both languages. She also lived in Germany for two years.

Working in Theatre and TV

Toti worked as a translator and an actress. With her husband and other young people, she started a street theatre company. It was called Kukubiltxo, and she was part of it for five years. They performed in Larrabetzu, a town in Biscay where she lives.

Between 1983 and 1984, Toti worked with the Basque Government's Department of Education. She helped make over 40 educational videos. She also wrote two books about Basque legends and theatre activities. She even taught classes to teachers and staff in that department.

In 1985, Toti started working with Euskal Telebista (EITB). This is the public television channel in the Basque Country. She created a 13-episode TV series about nature. From 1986 to 1992, she wrote and directed 1200 TV shows. These shows were in Basque and were made for children and young people.

Writing Career and Books

In 1992, Toti went back to working as a translator. She also started a new period of writing books. She created large mascots for different sports events. Juan Luis Landa became the artist who regularly drew pictures for her books.

So far, Toti has published 57 books. Some of her books have been translated into other languages. You can find her stories in French, German, Russian, and Chinese.
