Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Townsville Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Centre (TATSICC) is a special place in Townsville. It's where you can learn all about the amazing history, culture, and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples from North Queensland.

This centre is like a living museum! It shows off beautiful art, tells stories, and hosts daily performances of dance and music. It's a great spot for locals, Australians from other areas, and visitors from all over the world to discover more about Indigenous cultures. TATSICC also helps Indigenous artists by offering training.

Inside TATSICC, there's an Interpretive Gallery. Here, you can see old and new artworks and items from North Queensland. There's also a gallery where you can see and buy art by famous Indigenous artists. A big goal of the centre is to give Indigenous dance and performance groups a place to practice and show their talents. You can even take guided tours of the galleries, and there are two public dance shows every day!

The centre has a team of five full-time staff. It also helps 12 unemployed Indigenous people each year by offering them one-year training programs. TATSICC has a performance area, an art gallery, a cafe, and shops. It also features a courtyard and a collection of cool steel sculptures shaped like Indigenous figures.

A Look Back: How TATSICC Started

The Townsville Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Centre officially opened its doors in August 2005. But before that, there was a special launch event in July 2005. About 500 people attended this event. Elders performed a traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony. This ceremony is done to clear an area of bad spirits. Torres Strait Islander elders also shared a traditional song of prayer. This was to protect everyone who would visit the centre.

Planning for a Cultural Hub

The idea for a cultural centre like TATSICC had been around for a very long time. People started planning and asking for it way back in the 1960s! The goal was to create a meeting place for Indigenous people. It would be a spot where they could share their culture with younger generations and with anyone interested in learning.

Over the years, at least five different plans for the centre were suggested. It was hard to find a good place to hold Aboriginal cultural events or planning meetings. Finally, in 2003, the perfect spot was found at the Reef HQ complex. Before this, places like the Dean Park Soundshell were considered. That spot would have offered open spaces for cultural activities. However, the City Council decided against it.

Funding the Dream

In October 1999, the Australian Government announced a big grant of $3 million. This money was for a "North Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Centre." Another group, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission, added $2 million. The Townsville Regional Council of ATSIC also helped. They gave $80,000 to create a plan for the centre.

Once the project was approved, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders Advisory Committee of Townsville City Council led the planning. This was from October 1999 to July 2001. After that, a different group, the Queensland Heritage Trails Network Cultural Centre Steering Committee, took over. In total, the centre cost about $6 million to build.
