Transkei facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Transkei was a special area in southeastern South Africa. It was created as a "homeland" for a specific group of people, mainly the Xhosa people. Its capital city was Umtata, which is now called Mthatha. The famous leader Nelson Mandela was born in this region.

What Was the Transkei?

The Transkei was one of several "Bantustans" or "homelands" created by the South African government during a time called apartheid. Apartheid was a system where people were separated by race, and the government tried to keep different racial groups apart. These homelands were meant to be self-governing areas for Black South Africans.

A Homeland in Southeastern South Africa

The name "Transkei" means "the area beyond the Kei River." This river is in the eastern part of South Africa. The Transkei was located on the southeastern coast of the country. It was made up of several pieces of land, not one single block.

The Transkei was declared "independent" by South Africa in 1976. However, most other countries in the world did not recognize it as a truly independent country. They saw it as a part of South Africa's apartheid system.

Who Lived in the Transkei?

The Transkei was mainly home to the Xhosa people, one of the largest ethnic groups in South Africa. Many people who lived and worked in other parts of South Africa were still considered citizens of the Transkei. This meant they had fewer rights in the main areas of South Africa.

Nelson Mandela's Connection

One of the most famous people born in the Transkei was Nelson Mandela. He was born in a small village called Mvezo, which was part of the Transkei region. Mandela later became a key leader in the fight against apartheid and eventually became the first democratically elected president of South Africa.

The End of the Transkei

The Transkei existed until 1994. In that year, apartheid ended in South Africa, and the country held its first democratic elections. All the homelands, including the Transkei, were re-joined with South Africa. This meant that all people in South Africa, regardless of their background, became citizens of a united country.
