Discovering the Tretheway Block
A Building with Many Styles
The Tretheway Block looks very unique! It was mostly designed in the Queen Anne style. But it also has parts that look like Romanesque and Moorish buildings. This mix of styles makes it "eclectic," meaning it combines different ideas.
Look at the front of the building. You will see three smaller sections in the middle. They have rounded tops called "banded arches." On the sides, there are two larger sections with rounded, ribbed domes. These domes and arches are inspired by Moorish designs.
At the very top of the building, there is a decorative ledge called a "cornice." This cornice has a pattern of small arches. The building also has four tall parts that stick up. These parts, along with the arches, show the Romanesque style. You can also spot cool metal flower shapes made of Zinc on these tall parts and other places on the building.
What Was Inside?
A farmer named John Tretheway built this building. When it first opened, the ground floor was a hardware store. People could buy tools and other items there. The floors above were used for lodging, which means people could rent rooms to stay in.
Later, in 1925, the building became a hotel. It was called the Hotel Argonaut. It stayed a hotel for many years, until the 1970s.
A Historic Landmark
The Tretheway Block is an important building. On October 29, 1982, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places in the United States that are important to history or architecture.
