Discovering the Triton Museum's History
How the Museum Started
The Triton Museum of Art was first opened in 1965. It was founded in San Jose, California, by a rancher, lawyer, and art lover named W. Robert Morgan and his wife June. This makes it the oldest museum in Santa Clara County that isn't part of a university.
Moving to a New Home
Less than two years after it opened, the Triton Museum moved to its current spot. This new location is in Santa Clara, California. At first, the museum had its exhibits and programs in four separate buildings. These buildings were surrounded by a big seven-acre park.
Building a Modern Space
During the 1970s, the Santa Clara Valley grew a lot. More people and businesses meant the museum needed a bigger space. A new building was finished in October 1987. This new facility is 22,000 square feet. It has tall ceilings, pyramid-shaped skylights, and special lighting. The design helps show off the art in many ways. It also makes visiting the museum a really nice experience.
What You'll Find at the Triton Museum
Art from the Bay Area and Beyond
The Triton Museum of Art is right across from the Santa Clara Civic Center. It collects and shows both modern and older artworks. The museum especially highlights artists from the Greater Bay Area. This means you can see art made by talented people from nearby!
Visiting the Museum
Each year, over 50,000 people visit the museum in person. They come for the art exhibits, educational programs, and community events. The museum also has other galleries and exhibits in different locations. Over 90,000 people see these satellite exhibits every year.
Special Art Collections
The Triton Museum has some amazing permanent collections. One is the Austen D. Warburton collection. This collection features art and artifacts from Indigenous American cultures. The museum also has the largest public collection of paintings by Theodore Wores. He was a famous artist, and you can see many of his works here.
Supporting the Museum
The Triton Museum is a non-profit organization. This means it doesn't aim to make money. Instead, it relies on support from its members and the community. Their contributions help the museum keep its doors open and offer great programs.
