How Trivago Started
Trivago was founded in Düsseldorf, Germany, in January 2005. The people who started it saw a chance to create the first hotel search engine in Germany. They wanted to make it easy for people to compare hotel prices.
Trivago received money from investors to help it grow. In 2007, they got over a million US dollars. Later, in 2010, they sold a part of their company for a lot more money.
In 2012, Expedia, a large American travel company, decided to buy a part of Trivago. This deal was completed in 2013.
Trivago also bought other smaller companies. In 2014, they bought Rheinfabrik, a company that makes mobile apps. In 2016, they bought a part of Base7booking, which helps hotels manage their bookings.
By April 2016, Trivago had 1,000 employees. They even started building a new office campus in Düsseldorf.
On December 16, 2016, Trivago became a public company. This means its shares can be bought and sold on the NASDAQ stock exchange.
In 2019, Rolf Schrömgens, one of the founders and the CEO, stepped down. Axel Hefer took over as the new CEO.
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 greatly affected Trivago. Sales dropped a lot, and the company had to cut many jobs.
In 2021, Trivago bought weekend.com. This company helps travelers find fun weekend trips. Also in 2021, Trivago partnered with Chelsea Football Club. They became the club’s official training wear partner.
How Trivago Works
Trivago's main office is in Düsseldorf, Germany. All of the company's employees work there.
Trivago's Business Model
Trivago is a website that compares hotel prices. It earns money from its advertising partners. These partners, like booking websites and hotels, pay Trivago when users click on their listings. This is called a "cost-per-click" (CPC) model.
Booking platforms and hotels can list their prices on Trivago. They pay for each time a Trivago user clicks on their hotel.
Trivago also has a tool called "Hotel Manager." Hotels can use this tool to promote their places on the Trivago website. Some versions are free, and some cost money.
Trivago says it is the biggest online hotel search site. It compares prices from over 1 million hotels and more than 250 booking websites.

Trivago Rating Index (tRI)
The tRI is a score that combines all ratings for hotels on Trivago. It ranks hotels from 0 to 100. This score looks at things like location, price, food, internet, rooms, and facilities. Trivago uses the tRI to create yearly rankings and awards. These include the Reputation Ranking and the Top Hotel Awards.
Trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI)
The tHPI shows the average price for a hotel room in popular cities worldwide. These prices are based on the cost of a standard double room. Trivago collects over 2 million price checks each day to create this index.
Trivago Marketing
Trivago uses online ads, public relations, and TV commercials to market itself.
The "Trivago Guy"
When Trivago first showed its TV ad in the U.S. in 2012, the actor in the ad became famous. People on Twitter started talking about him using the hashtag #trivagoguy.
Rolling Stone magazine said Trivago wanted someone "real and approachable." They chose actor Tim Williams for the ad. The "Trivago guy" became an unexpected celebrity.
Trivago even held a contest asking people to give the "Trivago guy" a makeover. He inspired funny parodies and fan stories online.
Many people wondered why the actor wasn't wearing a belt in the ad. Tim Williams said it was an accident. The belts he had didn't fit his pants. He thought it ended up being a good thing for the ad. Because the "Trivago guy" was so popular in the U.S., Trivago made similar ads in French and Spanish.
From 2016 to 2017, the French actor Mehdi Nebbou was the "Trivago guy" in Germany. For Latin America, Spanish actor Gonzalo Peña appeared in the ads. In Brazil, actor Willian Mello was the face of Trivago.
In 2016, Trivago aired ads in India with Abhinav Kumar. He also became very popular online. Today, the "Trivago guy" is a well-known internet meme.
The "Trivago Girl"
In the UK, Australian actress and musician Gabrielle Miller appears in Trivago's ads.
In Japan, singer/songwriter Natalie Emmons is in their TV commercials. In Malaysia, actress Dahlia Shazwan has starred in Trivago's advertisements.
