Troy, South Dakota facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Troy is a small, quiet place located in Grant County, which is in the state of South Dakota in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county. Only about 71 people live in Troy, making it a very small community.

History of Troy

Troy has a simple but interesting history. Back in 1880, a post office was opened in Troy. A post office was a really important place in those days because it was how people sent and received letters, packages, and news. It helped connect the community to the rest of the world. This post office served the people of Troy for many years, finally closing its doors in 1955.

A few years after the post office opened, in 1886, the area where Troy is located was officially "laid out" by the Milwaukee Railroad. This means the railroad company planned out the streets and lots for what they hoped would become a bustling town. Railroads were very important for travel and trade in the past, and they often helped new communities grow up along their tracks.
