Tulsa Signature Symphony facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Tulsa Signature Symphony is a group of professional musicians who play classical music. They are based at Tulsa Community College (TCC) in Oklahoma. Think of them as the college's own special orchestra!

The orchestra was started in 1978 by a person named Dr. G. Barry Epperley. He was the leader of the orchestra for a very long time, until he retired in 2014.

History of the Symphony

The Tulsa Signature Symphony has changed its name and size a few times over the years.

How It Started

When it first began in 1978, it was a smaller group called the Tulsa Little Symphony. It was a "chamber orchestra," which means it had fewer musicians than a full symphony orchestra.

Becoming the Oklahoma Sinfonia

In the early 1980s, the group changed its name to the Oklahoma Sinfonia. During this time, they played many concerts with "pops" and "light classics." This means they played popular songs and easier classical pieces that many people enjoy. They performed these concerts at the Brady Theater for over ten years.

The Signature Symphony Today

In 1997, the orchestra grew much larger. It became a full "ensemble," which is another word for a musical group. At this time, it also changed its name to the Tulsa Signature Symphony. This is when they officially joined with Tulsa Community College, where they perform today.
