The Tupungato River (in Spanish: Río Tupungato) is a river in western Argentina. It flows through the Uco Valley in Mendoza Province. This river starts high up in the mountains and eventually joins the Mendoza River.

The Tupungato River begins its journey from the Del Plomo and Del Juncal glaciers. These glaciers are found in the northern part of Tupungato Mountain. The river's starting point is very high, about 4,251 meters (13,947 feet) above sea level. This is higher than many clouds!

The area where the Tupungato River collects all its water is called its drainage basin. This basin covers a large space of 1,858 square kilometers (717 square miles). The river flows through the Luján de Cuyo and Tupungato areas.

Why the Tupungato River Can Be Dangerous

The Tupungato River can be quite powerful, especially during certain times of the year. From November to March, which is summer in Argentina, the weather gets warmer. This warmth causes the ice and snow on the glaciers to melt much faster.

When a lot of ice melts, more water flows into the river. This extra water makes the river stronger and faster. Because of this, the river can be dangerous during these months. It's important to be careful near the river when the water levels are high.

What Rivers Join the Tupungato?

Rivers often have smaller streams or rivers that flow into them. These are called tributaries. The Tupungato River has two main tributaries that add to its water flow:

  • Plomo River
  • Blanco River I

These rivers help to increase the amount of water in the Tupungato River as it flows downstream.
