The school was started in the early 1900s by a famous New Zealander named Major General Sir Andrew Hamilton Russell. He was from Hawke's Bay and managed a farm in Twyford. He was a brave soldier who fought in the First World War. After the war, he became a Member of Parliament and held many important roles. He was also a founding member of the New Zealand Round Table club.

Interestingly, Sir Andrew Hamilton Russell had attended a school called Twyford School in England when he was a boy. The principal of Twyford School New Zealand even visited the English school in 2010.
