Tzi-Bʼalam was an important ruler, or king, of the ancient Maya city of Copán. He was the tenth king to rule this powerful city. Archaeologists gave him the nickname "Moon Jaguar" because of his name. He was the son of Bʼalam Nehn, who was the seventh ruler of Copán.

Who Was Tzi-Bʼalam?

Tzi-Bʼalam became king of Copán in May 553 CE. He ruled for about 25 years. During his time, Copán was a very important city. It was a center for art, science, and politics in the Maya world.

His Family and Rise to Power

Tzi-Bʼalam came from a royal family. His father, Bʼalam Nehn, had also been a king of Copán. This meant Tzi-Bʼalam was born into a position of power. When he took the throne, he continued his family's rule.

What Happened During His Reign?

Many important buildings and artworks were created when Tzi-Bʼalam was king. These show how skilled the Maya people were. His monuments can still be seen today in the area of Copán Ruinas. This place was once a big part of the ancient city.
