Who is Ulanji?
Ulanji is seen as a powerful snake who lived in the Dreamtime, a time when the world was being formed. He is an ancestor, meaning he was one of the first beings who shaped the land and left behind spirits.
Ulanji's Journey and Creations
Ulanji's journey began when he came out of the ground at a place called Markumundana. As he traveled, he created many parts of the landscape we see today.
- He walked to a big hill named Windilumba. There, he made a spring, which is a natural flow of water from the ground. He also created a mountain nearby.
- Ulanji then crossed a place now known as Limmen Creek. As he moved, he formed a range of hills and a valley. This valley became home to many waterholes, filled with beautiful lilies.
Ulanji and the Flying Foxes
In some stories, Ulanji was involved in shaping animals. For example, he is said to have played a part in the creation of flying foxes, which are a type of large bat.
Ulanji Spirits and Mungai Spots
As Ulanji traveled and performed ceremonies, he left behind many Ulanji spirits. These spirits came from his body and stayed in the places where he had been.
The Binbinga people believe that Ulanji created many special places called mungai spots. These spots are important because they are connected to totem animals. A totem animal is an animal that has a special spiritual link to a person or a group.
Both men and women among the Binbinga believe they can see the spirit children at these mungai spots. These spirits are thought to be connected to Ulanji and the creation stories.
Where Ulanji Ended His Journey
After traveling across a huge area and creating many mungai spots, Ulanji finally went back into the ground. This happened at a waterhole known as Uminiwura. His journey shows how important he was in shaping the land and leaving behind spiritual connections for the Binbinga people.
