Origin Pennington, England

The Goodyer's Elm (scientific name: Ulmus minor 'Goodyeri') is a special type of Field Elm. It was first found by a person named John Goodyer way back in 1624. He discovered it near a place called Pennington in England.

Sadly, there are no very old Goodyer's Elm trees left today. But new trees keep growing from the roots of the old ones. You can find many of these new trees in the lanes around the Alice Lisle pub in a small area called Rockford. For a long time, people sometimes confused Goodyer's Elm with other types of elm trees. But in 1937, a scientist named Ronald Melville found it again and helped everyone understand what it was.

What Makes Goodyer's Elm Special?

This elm tree looks different from most other British elms. It has a short, thick trunk and branches that spread out wide. Its leaves are also quite small, usually less than 3 centimeters long. This makes it look a bit like the Cornish Elm, another type of elm tree.

Challenges for Goodyer's Elm

Goodyer's Elm is very easily affected by a serious illness called Dutch elm disease. This disease is caused by a fungus and can kill elm trees quickly. Because of this disease, it's hard for Goodyer's Elm trees to grow very old.

Where Can You Find Goodyer's Elm?

This special elm tree is not widely grown in gardens or parks. There are only a few places in the United Kingdom where you can find it growing on purpose. Two places that have Goodyer's Elm trees are the Grange Farm Arboretum in Lincolnshire and the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in Hampshire. These places help protect and study different kinds of trees.

A small, mature Goodyer's Elm tree still grows near the Alice Lisle pub in Rockford. It has a bent trunk because it has been trying to find sunlight.
