Ultimate (sport) facts for kids
Ultimate, often called Ultimate Frisbee, is an exciting team sport played with a 175 gram flying disc. Two teams of 7 players try to score points by throwing the disc to each other. The goal is to catch the disc in the other team's end zone.
This sport is played all over the world. You can find games from casual pickup matches to big international tournaments. Players need to be fast and good at jumping. They also need excellent throwing and catching skills. Strong defensive play is important too.
A unique part of Ultimate is that there are no official referees. Players make their own calls and work together to solve any disagreements. This is called the "Spirit of the Game."
How to Play Ultimate
Ultimate is easy to learn and fun to play. Here's how the game works:
Scoring Points
A team scores a point when one of its players catches the disc in the opponent's end zone. This is similar to scoring a touchdown in football.
Moving the Disc
Players can only move the disc by throwing it to a teammate. If you have the disc, you cannot run with it. You must stop and pivot on one foot, like in basketball. From this spot, you throw the disc to another player.
Turnovers
If a pass is not completed, it's called a "turnover." This means the other team gets the disc. A pass is incomplete if:
- The disc touches the ground.
- A defending player catches the disc.
- A defending player knocks the disc down.
- The disc goes out of bounds.
When a turnover happens, the other team immediately takes possession of the disc from where it went out or was dropped.
