Umar Bin Hassan was born in Akron, Ohio, in 1948. His birth name was Gilbert Jerome Huling. He is an American poet and a recording artist. This means he writes poems and also makes music.
Umar Bin Hassan is known for being part of a group called The Last Poets. To join them, he once sold his younger sister's record player. He used the money to buy a bus ticket to New York City. That's where he met and joined The Last Poets.
In the middle of the 1990s, Umar Bin Hassan released his own album. It was called Be Bop or Be Dead. This album was released by Axiom Records, which was part of Island Records/PolyGram.
Working with Other Artists
In 1994, Umar Bin Hassan was featured on a special music collection. This collection was a CD called Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool. It was put together by the Red Hot Organization. On this album, he performed a song called "This is Madness." He worked with Abiodun Oyewole and Pharoah Sanders on this track. The famous Time magazine even called this album "Album of the Year."
