Illegal immigration facts for kids
Illegal immigration happens when people move to a country without following its immigration laws. This means they might enter a country secretly, or they might come legally (like as a visitor) but then stay longer than they are allowed.
Millions of people around the world live in a country where they do not have the legal right to be. These people are often called undocumented immigrants. They might work without permission and sometimes live in difficult conditions.
Often, people move illegally from poorer countries to richer ones. Living in a country without legal permission can lead to being caught, sent back to their home country, or facing other penalties.
Immigration in the United States
Many people try to cross the border between Mexico and the United States without permission each year. In the U.S., there are different views on how to handle this.
The Republican Party generally believes that people who are in the country illegally should be sent back to their home countries. On the other hand, the Democratic Party often wants to find ways to help these immigrants gain legal status.
In 2016, Donald Trump, a Republican, campaigned on the idea of building a large wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. His goal was to stop more people from entering the country illegally.
