The Union Block is a really old and important building in downtown Lewiston, Maine. You can find it at 21-29 Lisbon Street. It was built in 1870. This building is a great example of something called Italianate architecture. It was built when Lewiston was growing a lot! In 1986, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a special place worth protecting.

What is the Union Block?
The Union Block stands on the west side of Lisbon Street. This street is the main shopping area in Lewiston. The building is just south of where Lisbon Street meets Main Street.
Building Features
The Union Block is a three-story building made of brick. It has nine sections, called "bays," across its front. On the ground floor, there are three different storefronts. These are like the display areas for shops.
The two storefronts on the left have doors that are set back a bit. They also have big glass windows on each side. The storefront on the right has just one display window. Even though the shop fronts are new, the strong stone pillars between them are original. The main doors to the building are at the very ends of the front.
Architectural Style
The windows on the upper floors are special. They are in panels with rounded tops. They also have stone ledges above and below them. The very top of the building has a deep, decorative edge called a "cornice." This cornice has fancy brackets and small blocks called "modillions" that make it look even nicer. This style is typical of Italianate architecture.
Who Built the Union Block?
The Union Block was built in 1870. A man named John Y. Scranton built it. He was a well-known clothing seller in Lewiston. He had been running his business there since 1857.
Meeting Spaces Inside
The upper floors of the Union Block were used as a meeting place. Different groups rented this space over the years.
Community Groups
Some of the groups that met here included the Knights of Pythias. This is a friendly organization that helps people and communities. Another group was the International Order of Odd Fellows. They also focus on helping others and building strong communities. The Kora Temple, a local Shriner organization, also used the space. Shriners are known for their fun parades and for supporting children's hospitals.
