The Union Evangelical Church is an old and important church in Addison, Maine. It was built around 1860. This church is special because it mixes two old building styles: Greek Revival and Gothic Revival. In 1996, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a very important historical building in the United States.

About the Church Building

The Union Evangelical Church is located west of Addison's main village. It sits on a hill overlooking the Pleasant River. From here, you can see beautiful views of the Maine coast.

The church is made of wood and has one story. It has a pointed roof and its sides are covered with clapboard. The foundation is made of strong granite.

The Church Tower

On top of the roof, there is a tall, square tower. This tower has two parts. The bottom part is low. The top part is a belfry, where bells might have been. This belfry has rectangular openings on each side. These openings have decorative frames around them.

A simple, tooth-like design called a dentillated cornice is at the top of this section. The tower might have once had a crown-like top called crenellations.

Outside Details

The corners of the church building have flat, column-like decorations called pilasters. These pilasters have pointed arch designs on them. They reach up to a wide band of decoration that goes across the front and sides of the church.

The front of the church looks the same on both sides. It has two doors, one on each side. In the middle, there are two tall, narrow windows. Both the windows and the doors have a special Gothic-style molding above them. This same molding is also found above the windows on the sides of the church.

A Look at History

The first church on this spot was built in 1789. Sadly, a big storm in 1839 destroyed it. A second church was built soon after. But in 1860, lightning struck it, causing a fire that destroyed it too.

The church you see today was built very soon after the fire in 1860. We don't know who designed or built it. However, it looks very similar to another church in nearby Columbia.
