The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is a special group in India. Its main job is to help the Indian government find the best people for important jobs. They do this by holding tough exams.
UPSC also helps train these new officers and decides where they will work. Some of the well-known exams UPSC conducts are the Civil Services Exam, CDS, IES, NDA, and IFOS.
Besides these five, UPSC holds many other exams. These exams help fill empty positions in the government. The Civil Services Exam is one of the hardest exams in the world. It helps recruit future leaders for the government of India.
How UPSC Started
A fair way to choose government workers based on their skills started in India in 1854. Before this, the East India Company used to pick people for these jobs. They would train them at a place called Haileybury College in London.
In the early days, the exams were designed to help British people. They were also only held in London. This made it very hard for Indians to join these important government jobs.
It was not until 1922 that the civil services exam started happening in India too. Satender Nath Tagore was the first Indian to pass this exam in 1864. By 1922, only four other Indians had managed to pass it.
In 1935, a group called the Federal Public Service Commission was created. It became official on April 1, 1937.
UPSC After India's Freedom
India became free on August 15, 1947. After India's own rulebook, the Constitution, was started on January 26, 1950, the Federal Public Service Commission changed its name. It became the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). This change happened under a part of the Indian Constitution.
Every year, about one million students apply for the Civil Services exam. This is known as one of the most respected and difficult exams in India. UPSC conducts this exam to find talented people for the government.
