The U.S. Post Office-Ansonia Main is a special building in Ansonia, Connecticut. It's also known as the Ansonia Main Post Office. This important building is located at 237 Main Street.

A famous architect named Oscar Wenderoth designed it. The building was finished in 1914. It stands out in Ansonia's downtown area because of its beautiful design. In 1985, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes buildings that are important to history.

What Does the Post Office Look Like?

The Ansonia Main Post Office is on the east side of Main Street. You can find it between Bridge Street and Kingston Drive. It is a single-story building made of steel and stone. The outside is covered in smooth, light-colored limestone.

Front Design and Details

The front of the building has a special entrance. It is set back from the main wall. Four tall, round columns stand in front of this entrance. These columns are in the Ionic style, which means they have scroll-like shapes at the top.

The roof is low and flat. You can't see it from the street. Instead, there's a decorative railing above a fancy trim called a cornice. This cornice has small block-like shapes, which are called dentils.

Inside the Building

When you go inside, you'll find a lobby. The floor is made of white terrazzo marble. This is a type of floor made from chips of marble set in cement. The walls are smooth plaster. There is also original wooden trim around the doors and windows.

At the back of the building, there is a newer part. It is made of light brown bricks. This addition helps the post office with modern needs. It includes a loading dock for mail trucks.

History of the Ansonia Post Office

The Ansonia Main Post Office was completed in 1914. It was designed by Oscar Wenderoth. At that time, he worked for the U.S. government. He was the main architect for the Office of the Supervising Architect for the U.S. Treasury. This office designed many government buildings.

Oscar Wenderoth created the plans for this post office in 1913. That year, his office designed 40 different buildings! The Ansonia Post Office is a great example of Classical Revival architecture. This style uses ideas from ancient Greek and Roman buildings. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in Ansonia.
